Hi all,

Feels strange to introduce myself to my own college mates but thats the way life conducts its business, I guess. Anyways, its been three years since i left the college and expecting any of the present Ravenshawvians to remember old-timers like me is unrealistic.

My name is Saswat Sahoo. Joined +2 Science in the Ravenshaw junior college and then in 2001 joined the B.I.T.M. Though I was a day scholar, I spent most of the time in East Hostel annex (that tiny hostel beside the East hostel mess) where we planned and executed some of the best drama functions and events of our times. I passed out from the college in 2004.

At present I am staying in Mumbai. Here I am working as a Production Pipeline TD, which for the uninitiated, is someone who manages the technological aspects, writes programs, develops software, and manages the production flow (pipeline) in an Animation studio, which is a highly technology-intensive workplace. The company I work for is a Hollywood Animation studio based at Los Angeles. At mumbai, they have their only overseas subsidiary. In India, this is the only Hollywood studio. We've worked on movies like X-men, Fast n the Furious, Narnia, Superman, Garfield, Babe, and many other movies. Many of the movies have been oscar nominated also.

Hi sandeep,

Wow, feels nice to get to know someone from my good old department, makes me nostalgic about those days. Well, moving on, How's life in Ravenshaw Sandeep ?. Are things the same or have they changed ? Shyama sir, Bez Sir, Gopala budha ( no offence intended ), Bibhu Sir (HOD) are they still there ? Yes, I do know Anil Behera. Our last year was spent mainly in playing dirty politics against him. Sounds so bad, doesn't it ? That's what life in Ravenshaw was all about - a period of missed oppurtunities and wasted chances, yet so memorable. Standing where I am today and looking in prespective , I realize the follies we committed. But had it not for Ravenshaw, I wouldn't have learnt to push my way through anywhere against any odds. Ravenshaw made a man out of me. The things I learnt during my years in Ravenshaw which was virtually my first home( East Hostel Annexe ) prepared me to face life. I believed it then and I believe it now, that its always good to be hardworking but its better to be smart working. Take risks in life especially when age is in our side. Explore your potentials, experiment with things. Never get swayed by the crowd. I will keep writing down my thoughts in this forum and hopefully my experience will provide some food for thought to you guys. I know, unless things have changed drastically, what you must be feeling about your future. I understand your anxiety but believe me its nothing to worry about. Oppertunities are plenty, make sure you are not sleeping when it knocks at the door and if it takes too long to knock, dont wait open the door and go in search of it.

Yours,
Saswat ( If the tables have not been painted yet, can you confirm if my name is still written on the tables). Very Happy

Hi pati,

Its a dream of mine to make a movie on life in Ravenshaw. Having seen both sides of the coin, I believe it would make a great documnetary. Students coming from far off villages to fulfill with hopes in their eyes, their parents spending their hard earned money in the trust that their children are studying in a great college like Ravenshaw. Hostel life, the happy days of roaming like tigers in the college unafraid of anything. The 'khattis' at gedu bhai chai shop, eating out at KK, Ladies hostel, kunja bana, inter departmental feuds, drama functions, the without-any-reason strikes, college politics, elections . The list it go on and maybe you would think I have seen only the bad side of Ravenshaw. But its in these things that we learn the greatest lessons of life. Isn't that what education is supposed to teach us ? My years at Ravenshaw were so eventful, be it in terms of studies or extra curricular activities, I've always been 'involved' in things. That makes me confident that maybe I can do justice to the documentary on Ravenshaw. Would like to know what you guys think about it, any ideas.

Yours Saswat,

PostPosted: Sat Jun 10, 2006 4:26 am    Post subject: Thank you and more ............. Reply with quote

Hi guys,

Thank you for admitting me into the Enthusiatists group. I went through the recent postings of the members particularly pati and vijay's, sounded like things are changing for good. Its high time we, the ravenshawvians teamed up and contributed towards the community(Ravenshawvians). Its pay back time folks and lets get things rolling. Ideas, we may have many because there's a lot that needs to be done but frankly speaking its the present students that have to actually get things done. Afterall its their life that is directly impacted by what happens in the college, its their career thats at stake. We old timers can only initiate, guide and help them. From my experience, I know how difficult it is to break the slumber of the college adminstration and make things change. The present corps of students are the one who have to do that. Meanwhile we can, with the help of forums like this, atleast bring the past and present generation of Ravenshawvians under one roof for a common purpose. Forums like this are probably, in this age of technology, the best and efficient way to propagate ideas. But we have to raelise one thing early, change can only be brought by getting your hands dirty in doing things at the college, not by philosophising sitting in AC rooms typing into the computer.

My sincere request to all those who happen to read these postings is to encourage their freinds and class mates visit this site, post their comments. discuss problems and then implement the ideas in college. This should not be only about career, its about what we make of us as human beings. The very fact that you are reading this, even if it may be just out of curiosity, means you are one who is concerned about about your college. Thats the starting point - the feeling that somethings not quiet right, somethings should change.

Be it your career issues or any aspect in your student life, I strongly encourage you all to discuss with the community. Noone here I believe is an expert on these issues but by mutual sharing of our experience we can hope to understand them, if not solve them.

Hi,

Note : My name is Saswat Sahoo, the person I am about to tell you about is Saswat pattnayak

Just sent mails to ten of my class mates telling them about this site. Hope everyone does the same, indeed the more the merrier.

I also invited someone whose life has influenced me tremendously, Mr Saswat Pattnayak. He is currently a Ph.D student at the Phillip Merrill College of Journalism, University of Maryland, College Park and working at the office of the university president dealing with diversity-related issues—Office of Human Relations Programs, University of Maryland. He was the Staff Writer for Hindustan Times for Ranchi, Jharkhand, India. Before that, Staff Writer for Hindustan Times for Bhubaneswar. Prior to that Reporter and Sub-Editor for The Asian Age. Before that he was reporting for The Economic Times at New Delhi.

He worked for Orissamatters.com and launched a psychology magazine, Ego, with three other friends.

I had the privelage of interacting with him when he used to come to our BITM department to take personality development classes. The first day he came he was wearing a half pant and a shabby t-shirt, his long hair tied in a pony tail. We looked at him in amazement, this is our personality development teacher ? Well, amazement soon gave way to awe. His methods of having students (even those who couldn't utter a single english word properly) to speak up their mind were unconventional to say the least. Once, he carried a TV set in his car all the way from Bhubaneswar and made us watch the movie 'Company'. He then assigned us to write a case study on 'Bussiness Ethics'. Believe it or not, that was the best article I'd ever written. Most of us wrote the case studies. He conducted group discusssions and treated everyone's views with such respect that the last benchers soon became the best speakers. I had written a few articles, stories and poems which I had never dared to show to anybody but I somehow felt that he was the right person to show them. So I did and the feedback he gave it something I remember to this day. He soon became busy with his work and we were back to square one. The new personality development teacher we got is/was a veteran English professor of Ravenshaw ( no names hint : HOD) who told us that because we didn't ahve any round table in our department it is not possible to conduct group discussions. That day I walked out the classroom in disgust.

Anyways, Mr Saswat Pattnayak is not an ex-Ravenshawvian but he teached in the college which he's mentioned in his profile ( check his site , its really really thought provoking), so that I guess qualifies him to post in this site.
